Accelerated rTMS
Rapid (5 days) and accessible treatment for Depression
Accelerated TMS for Depression
At Best Brains and Minds, we deliver Accelerated Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) using the well researched SAINT accelerated rTMS protocol* — a compact, optimised fast-acting treatment for individuals suffering from treatment-resistant depression.
Why choose Accelerated rTMS?
- 5-day compact rTMS treatment
- over 8 out of 10 people achieved a meaningful response.
- The treatment was found to be safe, non-invasive and well-tolerated
- It has shown to provide better clinical outcomes than the traditional 6 week rTMS with similar safety profile.
*Based on a double-blind randomized controlled trial of Stanford Neuromodulation Therapy (SAINT) — see Cole et al., Am J Psychiatry 2022; 179:132–141.
At our clinic, 8 out of 10 people achieved clinically meaningful benefit, up to 6 out of 10 people experienced significant improvement ( response) and 4 out of 10 people achieved remission in 5 days.
As with all treatments, outcome vary and not all patients experience improvement
What Is Accelerated rTMS?
Accelerated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment that has been developed as an option for people living with depression that has not improved with standard treatments. Unlike standard TMS, which is usually delivered once per day over several weeks, accelerated TMS involves 10 treatment sessions per day over 5 days.
Over a 5-day period, patients receive:
- 10 short sessions daily
- 50 total sessions
- 9 minutes of stimulation with 50-minute rest intervals
- Each patient received 90,000 pulses over the course of treatment, which is over 4 times higher than traditional rTMS
The treatment protocol delivered at our clinic uses the same stimulation design as the SAINT protocol, except for fMRI-based targeting. We use scientifically proven BEAM method to determine the treatment target. This may affect the high levels of response achieved at the clinical trials.
Who would benefit?
- People who suffer from chronic or treatment resistant depression
- People who have not recovered after being treated with over 2 antidepressants and remain unwell with or without suicidal thoughts
- People who are unable to take antidepressants due to side effects
- People who are unable to travel daily for 6 weeks to receive traditional rTMS treatment
- People who are affected by ongoing depression and are unable to access services due to the area they live or lack of transport facilities. (People are able to stay at a near by accommodation, during the course of 5 consecutive day treatment)
Advantages of having accelerated rTMS
- Rapid response to treatment
- Rapid reduction in severe symptoms such as suicidal ideation
- Ability to return to work, care for dependants and engage in social activities within a week.
- Well tolerated with minimum side effects.
What Results Can I Expect?
The chart demonstrates te reduction in symptoms severity of 3 patients who received accelerated rTMS at our clinic. All patients who receive treatment at our clinic will complete Becks Depression Inventory (BDI- Self rating scale) every morning during the 5 day treatment.
How the treatment works
During treatment, a magnetic coil is placed gently against the scalp. The coil delivers brief magnetic pulses that stimulate targeted areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. with accelerated rTMS, we target the Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex. The pulses used for stimulation are called Theta Bursts.
The procedure does not require anaesthesia or hospital admission, and patients remain fully awake.
- During the 50 minute rest intervals, you will be offered a comfortable place to relax, read or use your electronic devices.
- You are also able to walk out of the clinic, have coffee or meals during the rest intervals.
- You are able to drive daily. We are also able to provide information regarding nearby accommodation to stay over the 5 day duration of treatment.
Where is the treatment delivered?
Location:
- All sessions are conducted on-site over 5 consecutive days. We have a purpose built treatment centre at Hornsby NSW. People will be respectfully cared for by experienced and highly trained medical, nursing and allied health staff.
Outpatient Care:
- You can return home or to arranged accommodation after daily sessions.
Schedule:
- 10 sessions per day.
- Each session lasts 9 minutes.
- 50-minute intervals between sessions.
- Daily schedule runs from 7:30 am – 4:30/5:30 pm.
Environment:
Comfortable space provided for rest. Patients may leave for coffee/food if approved by the healthcare provider.
Accommodation:
- Recommendations available near the clinic.
- Highly suitable for rural or regional patients who cannot commit to the 5-6 week program but need a more intensive treatment options.
What’s the Cost?
If you’re eligible under Medicare:
- First 35 sessions: Covered
- Remaining 15 sessions: $50 each
- Total out-of-pocket: $750
Without Medicare:
- Full course cost: $6,175
Am I Eligible?
You may qualify if you:
- Are over 18 ( over 16 years, would be accepted on private basis)
- Have tried at least two antidepressants without success or unable to take medications.
- Suffer from chronic or severe depression
Even if traditional rTMS didn’t work, accelerated rTMS still offers better outcomes.
What About My Daily Life?
We recommend taking one week off from work or study. During this time, you’ll also receive:
- Relapse prevention strategies
- Lifestyle coaching
- Psychological support materials
Do I Need a Companion?
Treatment is outpatient.
- You can usually drive or take public transport.
- Having someone with you on day one is encouraged but not required.
How Long Do Benefits Last?
Clinical trials show results lasting at least one-month post-treatment. We also provide structured 6-month follow-up support to maintain wellness.
People who have received accelerated rTMS in our clinic have remained in remission for over 6 months.
Follow-Up Care
Our team will support you at:
- 1 week, 3 weeks, and monthly post-treatment
- Includes at least two in-person visits with a doctor
- Further 15 sessions of rTMS is available for maintenance and re treatment.
